Transcripts

Every student will receive an official transcripts of the Freie Universität Berlin after the successful completion of all program requirements. The transcript will show the course title, the number of contact hours, the number of credits earned as well as the grade(s). The transcript will be sealed and either be mailed directly to the student's home university's Office of the Registrar or to the student’s home address if the student provides the complete and correct contact information. Additional copies can be obtained at any time for an additional charge of 25 €.

Credits and Credit Calculation

The Freie Universität Berlin uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). ECTS is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. For successfully completed studies, ECTS credits are awarded.

One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS-credits that are equivalent to 1500-1800 hours of study in all countries irrespective of standard or qualification type and is used to facilitate transfer and progression throughout the European Union. Accordingly, 1 ECTS credit equals 25-30 hours of study.

The Academic Senate of the Freie Universität Berlin stipulates that 1 ECTS credit awarded is equivalent to 30 hours of study.

Please note that ECTS is workload – and not a contact hour based – system for measuring and comparing the study attainment and performance of students. For administrators working with a contact hour based system, every transcript of the Freie Universität Berlin International Summer University also lists the number of contact hours for each class.

Credits are awarded only when the course has been completed, all requirements have been fulfilled, and examinations have been passed successfully.
