Excursion to Weimar
Goethe-Schiller Monument in Weimar
The charming city of Weimar lies at the curve of the river Ilm in the center of Germany. The city, which became a UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1998, became an important center of the Weimar classical period (late 18th century/early 19th century) under the rule of Duchess Anna Amalia and that of her son, Duke Carl August, and thanks to the presence of Wieland, Goethe, Herder, Schiller, Falk and other important personalities of the epoch. The concepts of the Weimar Republic as well as those of the Bauhaus movement complete Weimar’s world-renowned cultural heritage. Weimar offers numerous interesting sights: the Wittum palace, the “Duchess Anna Amalia” Library, the resident castle, Schiller’s house and Goethe’s house and museum. Yet, not far from this center of German cultural history lies a reminder of the dark side of Germany’s past: the Buchenwald concentration camp. This contrast between incredible cultural achievements and the atrocities committed during the national socialist period is another thought-provoking aspect of Weimar’s and Germany’s history that visitors can discover and witness here.
