Tom Brislin is a professor and chairman of the Academy for Creative Media, the University of Hawai‘i’s film school. He was previously the founding chair of the School of Communications. His teaching and research interests include media ethics; international and intercultural journalism and mass communication; global cinema and popular culture. He was twice a Fulbright scholar in Germany and a RIAS Berlin Komission fellow.

In the professional world, Brislin served 12 years at The Honolulu Advertiser, including positions as city editor, assistant news editor and education reporter/editor. Before coming to Hawaii in 1977 he edited the Pacific Dateline on Guam, where he also directed radio and TV news and educational TV programming.

Brislin received his B.A. from the University of Guam and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Mass Communication at The Ohio State University. Brislin administers the Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism ethics programs, a nationally recognized effort to increase the understanding of professional ethics among journalism students and working media professionals. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics and is a contributing editor to Media Ethics. He is widely published in the U.S. and Japan.
