Dr. Gertraud Maskarinec

Dr. Gertraud Maskarinec was trained as a physician at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and later received an MPH and a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Hawaii. Since 1995, she has been a faculty member at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Her research in cancer epidemiology concentrates on the dietary prevention of breast cancer with a focus on bioactive compounds in soy beans and other plant foods. Other research interests include obesity, diabetes, and disease risk in children and adolescents. Much of her work has explored differential rates of disease across countries and ethnic groups. Her enthusiasm for traveling brings her frequently to Germany where she has taught several summer classes for the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
