Dr. Dirk Verheyen has directed and coordinated several programs hosted and/or set up by the Freie Universität since 2000. He served as Director of American University's World Capitals Program in Berlin from 2000 until 2004 and UNC Chapel Hill’s Honors-Abroad Program in Berlin from 2002 until 2004, before becoming FU-BEST Director in 2005. A specialist on transatlantic, European, and German affairs, Dr. Verheyen was born and raised in the Netherlands and lived in the U.S. from 1975 until 1999. He completed a B.A. at Macalester College in 1978 and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in 1980 and 1988, respectively, at the University of California at Berkeley. From 1989 until 1999, he taught Political Science at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, focused on international and comparative politics. His publications include The German Question: A Cultural, Historical, and Geopolitical Exploration (Westview Press, 1999), The Germans and Their Neighbors (co-edited with Christian Soe; Westview Press, 1993), and United City, Divided Memories?: Cold War Legacies in Contemporary Berlin (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008).
