Transcripts & Credits

Transcripts

Every student will receive an official transcript of the Freie Universität Berlin after the successful completion of all program requirements. The transcript will show the course title, the number of contact hours, the number of credits earned as well as the grade(s).

One transcript will be sealed and be mailed approximately four weeks after the end of FUBiS either directly to the student's home university's Office of the Registrar or to the student’s home address, as long as the student provides the complete and correct contact information. We assume that about eight weeks after the end of FUBiS the transcript has arrived. Thereafter, any transcript request due to a lost transcript will be subject to the usual fees. Additional copies can be obtained at any time for an additional charge of 25 € (20 € processing fee plus 5 € for each copy).

Please note that credits can only be awarded if you are currently / have been enrolled at a university.

Credits and Credit Calculation

The Freie Universität Berlin uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). ECTS is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. For successfully completed studies, ECTS credits are awarded.

One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS-credits that are equivalent to 1500-1800 hours of study in all countries irrespective of standard or qualification type and is used to facilitate transfer and progression throughout the European Union. Accordingly, 1 ECTS credit equals 25-30 hours of study.

The Academic Senate of the Freie Universität Berlin stipulates that 1 ECTS credit awarded is equivalent to 30 hours of study.

Please note that ECTS is a system for measuring and comparing the study attainment and performance of students based on workload, not on contact hours. For administrators working with a contact hour based system, every transcript of the Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University also lists the number of contact hours for each class.

Credits are awarded only when the course has been completed, all requirements have been fulfilled, and examinations have been passed successfully. Please note that credits can only be awarded if you are currently / have been enrolled at a university.

Credit Transfer

Every student receives a Freie Universität Berlin/FUBiS transcript in order to facilitate credit transfer. The academic transcript lists all courses, the number of contact hours, the ECTS credits earned, and the final grade. FUBiS issues the transcript 4 weeks after the completion of the program. Please take into account that mail delivery may take 2 weeks or longer in some instances.

It should be noted that each institution has its own policy regarding credit transfer from other institutions. We strongly recommend that students consult with their Academic Advisor and/or Professor to receive credit transfer approval prior to enrolling in a FUBiS program. On the FUBiS website students will find the following course information as downloads:

Students who would like to receive transfer credits at their home university should print out all documents and contact their Professor and/or Study Abroad Advisor and ask for prior credit and grade approval. In case there are further questions, please contact FUBiS at: fubis@fubis.org.
