Freie Universität Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin is one of Europe's largest academic hubs. It was founded on December 4, 1948, by students and scholars with the support of the American Allies and Berlin politicians. Today, more than 30,000 students are enrolled at Freie Universität, which is seen as one of Germany's best research universities both nationally and internationally. The Freie Universität repeatedly ranks among the best German universities in national and international rankings.

This makes the Freie Universität Berlin one of the top academic institutions. It not only benefits from considerable funding for research, doctoral training, and internationalization, but also creates excellent conditions for young academics.

In addition, Freie Universität is one of the few German universities to be funded as a university of excellence for the third time as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments, since 2019 as part of the Berlin University Alliance. The application submitted by the four Berlin partners – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin, and Charité – University Medicine Berlin – is entitled “Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment.”

The overarching goal of the Berlin University Alliance is to act as a driving force in shaping an integrated research environment, thereby further developing Berlin as one of Europe’s leading academic hubs.

Just like the aspiration to take a leading role in global education, internationality is a fundamental part of Freie Universität Berlin's profile. Whether students come to the university through an academic exchange program or complete their studies entirely in Berlin, the student body at Freie Universität is characterized by diversity and a consistently high proportion of international students. To this end, Freie Universität maintains over 200 partnerships with renowned universities worldwide and more than 400 collaborations in the Erasmus+ mobility network. Four liaison offices abroad complement this important intellectual, academic, and cultural exchange, which is so highly valued by students, faculty, and staff at Freie Universität.

The campus of Freie Universität Berlin is located in the quiet and green southwest of Berlin. Thanks to the well-developed public transportation network, the university can be reached quickly and easily from anywhere in the city. Since 1998, the Freie Universität campus has been complemented by the GeoCampus Lankwitz, which is home to the geosciences and and the Free University's international short-term study programs, FUBiS and FU-BEST.
